What Is Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Wisdom tooth removal is a common procedure to remove one or more back molars (third molars) that are impacted, infected, painful, or likely to cause problems for the surrounding teeth and gums. The procedure is performed with effective local anesthesia and, if needed, sedation, so patients stay comfortable and have no pain during treatment. If you choose to be sedated, you don’t even remember the procedure. Most visits take about 30–60 minutes depending on how many teeth are removed and how complex they are, and you go home the same day with clear aftercare instructions. In our office, discomfort is carefully managed with prescribed strong pain medication and antibiotics to help control pain and reduce infection risk during healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Aurora Oral Surgeon Dr. Danesh Answering Common Wisdom Teeth Questions.

Will I have pain during my wisdom tooth extraction, or afterward?
Most patients are very comfortable during the procedure. If you choose IV sedation, many people feel relaxed throughout treatment and may remember little to nothing about the extraction afterward. After surgery, it’s normal to have some soreness for the first day or two, but most patients do well with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication (like ibuprofen) and ice. If stronger pain relief is needed, we’ll prescribe it when appropriate and guide you on exactly how to use it for the most comfortable recovery.
Yes—sedation is very safe for most patients when it’s properly planned and monitored. Before your procedure, we review your medical history, medications, and any past surgical or anesthesia experiences to understand your specific needs. Based on your overall health and comfort level, we recommend the type of sedation that is most appropriate and safest for you, and we closely monitor you throughout the visit to keep you comfortable and secure.

Most patients remember little to nothing about the procedure, especially with IV sedation. In some cases, depending on the level of sedation, how long the appointment takes, and individual safety/health factors, you may have brief or partial memories—but patients are typically very relaxed and comfortable throughout. This is a big reason sedation is a popular option for people with dental anxiety or a strong gag reflex.

A dry socket (also called alveolar osteitis) happens when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is lost or breaks down too early, which can slow normal healing and cause significant, throbbing pain. It most often shows up around day 3–4 after an extraction, although it can occasionally occur later, and the discomfort may radiate to nearby areas of the jaw or ear. Dry socket is more commonly associated with lower impacted wisdom teeth, and certain factors can increase risk. Before your procedure, we review your medical history and specific situation to identify your risk level and give you a clear prevention plan and aftercare instructions to help minimize the chance of dry socket.
Yes—there are a few important differences. Our specialist is an experienced board certified surgeon who focuses heavily on wisdom tooth removal, including more complex and higher-risk cases. We take time to evaluate your medical history and imaging, then recommend the safest approach and the most appropriate level of anesthesia or IV sedation for your situation. Our team is specially trained to provide anesthesia in an outpatient setting, and we use modern technology and proven surgical protocols to keep the experience efficient, safe, and as comfortable as possible—before, during, and after your procedure.
